Starry stonewort is an invasive plant-like algae that was first discovered in Minnesota in 2015. There are currently 11 known lakes in Minnesota with starry stonewort. You will have the opportunity to join us for a floating workshop to learn more about this invader and current control efforts. No experience is necessary for participants. We will cover the basics of starry stonewort identification, biology, and impacts and then take a deeper dive with local guest speakers. You will also get to enjoy some hands-on learning as we pull live starry stonewort on board along with other aquatic plant life to put your ID skills to the test.
We will wrap up with a lunch and learn session on dry land (lunch is provided). The registration fee is $35. Youth under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. AIS Detectors can record this time as an advanced training opportunity.
Please contact Megan Weber, MAISRC Extension Educator, at mmweber@umn.edu or (763) 767-3874 if you have any questions.
